Vision for 5G and IoT in MENA
According to the market research, MEA IoT spending is expected to grow by 15% in 2018, organizations will ramp up investments in connectivity that enables IoT solutions.
Dr. Hazim Al-rawi, the general manager for Comba Middle East and North Africa region, shares his thoughts on Comba's contributions and capabilities in connectivity enhancement in the region, as well as the focus to take on helping customers get on the 5G road.
Q1. How will the “disruptive” dimension of IoT impact on communication networks?
Hazim: IoT will potentially create a vast disruption in communication networks. This is concluded from the very definition of IoT as it consists of smart objects in the homes, offices, factories and all our surroundings that have the ability to interconnect and communicate with each other without the intervention of human (be it human-to-human or human-to-computer). Lots of features will move from central network component to the edge consumer devices, placing a huge challenge on the networks capacity handling.
Q2. How has Comba performed in the MENA telecom market so far?
Hazim: We had an excellent performance across MENA region in 2017. On BTS Antennas, Comba is now well recognized as the leading vendor especially after the 5-year global frame agreement with Ooredoo, across 10 OpCos, 7 of which are in MENA region, with a forecast to supply a huge proportion of BTS antennas. On the In-Building Solutions (IBS), we continue to be a leading supplier too and not only on conventional IBS solution for airports, shopping malls, hotels and VIP buildings but also for football stadiums. Comba is also very well positioned to take a leading role in technologies evolution, namely 5G, IoT solutions and smart city......
Comba enables 5G connectivity with massive MIMO/ beamforming technology which supports both 4G and 5G networks; and the 5G digital DAS that offers both advanced LTE and massive MIMO beamforming technology, complementing the long-term development of 5G connectivity in the wireless communications ecosystem.
It is a five-year agreement generating potential revenue of USD60 million for Comba, by providing base station antennas and associated ancillary products to Ooredoo in up to ten geographic markets. The project helps advance and expand Ooredoo’s macro networks capabilities and deliver ubiquitous 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G connectivity to end-users, enterprises and government organizations.
Since the acquisition of ETL, Comba has been actively engaged in various operations from network analysis, network planning to investment planning, aiming to promote the company's development in telecommunication network and services, value-added and other services in Lao P.D.R at a fast pace.
Phase I of the Chengdu Metro Line 8 is to link urban districts in Chengdu from south to north stretching 29.1km with 25 stations. The project involves four main systems for: specialized use, public security, passenger information and emergency communication, making its aggregate value around RMB 200 million.
Under the multi-year agreement, Comba becomes the major supplier of RF passive accessories to its partner to enhance its mobile network in the country, serving up to 442.5 million smartphone users by 2020 and generating millions of US dollars of revenue to the company.
Comba is assigned as a key supplier of base station antennas to deploy a 4G LTE network for the largest mobile operator in Brazil, providing more than 30,000 base station antennas, including outdoor directional quad-band antennas and outdoor directional hexa-band antennas over a period of three years.
The 60km main highway connects the metropolitan area of São Paulo and the Port of Santos and other coastal regions. Comba equips the highway with ComFlex DAS as core system to help five major local operators provide 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE coverage. The project contributes to highway safety for both tourists and those in the transportation service business crucial to the Brazilian economy.
Comba will deploy its new range of 8, 10 and 12 port 4.5G base station antennas based on the Antennas Frame Agreement. In addition, the latest mPico platform will also be delivered to enable Turkcell to manage multi-band wireless connection with fast configuration at low operational costs without compromising network performance.
Comba has won the award at the 10th Telecom Asia Readers' Choice & Innovation Awards 2017 co-organized by Telecom Asia and Questex Media and readers’ votes decided who win. Comba was recognized for the innovative design of its Scalable Heterogeneous Network Solution in the small-cell category.
Steven Cheng, Regional Product Manager for Comba USA, was presented with the IWCE Young Professionals Award on March 8th, recognizing his creativity and initiative that help shaping the future of the communications technology industry.
Gartner evaluated 15 small cell vendors in its annual market analysis. In the report, Comba is positioned as the one with the highest for ability to execute, and a major player in the small cell equipment market. The analysis is a recognition of our R&D efforts and business achievements in innovative small cell technology that is commercially attractive.

Comba was an active member at several industry events in the last quarter, meeting industry professionals and showcasing our latest product solutions in different occasions namely Connected City Conference in Hong Kong, DAS & Small Cell Congress Europe in Netherlands, City of Entrepreneurship in Portugal – Funchal City (view media interview from 54:15 to 58:11 in Portugueses) and Brazil Futurecom.
Comba's Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) solution can detect minor changes in temperature which triggers warning signs of damage or leaks at an early stage. It can monitor changes with a single fiber optic cable.
The solution is suitable for different senarios, especially gas and oil pipelines, smart grids, building power cables, water pipes, and district cooling.
The project involves a solution of high power active DAS system with modular remote units installed across the highways and tunnels offered by Comba to help five mobile companies deliver 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE services in Sâo Paulo. An efficient voice communication and high speed data system has been set up to meet the high data traffic needs of this longest and busiest highway in Brazil.
